What are parental controls for computer?

***If you haven't read the article on Broadband & Routers please read it first then read How to secure your Wireless Router.***

There are many great things about the internet for kids to enjoy, but also many dangers. Seemingly harmless things like video sharing sites like youtube, and Social Networking site like Facebook can have some can be fun and informative at times. These sites are also full of hidden dangers. Youtube is full of soft porn and young girls and boys being suggestive and dangerous. Facebook and Myspace can be great ways to connect with friends but it is also full of predators(You can learn more about these under the social networking tab at the top of this page). Depending on the age of your child and the circumstances of your household you will want to use some type of parental controls for your computer.

There are many ways to limit what your child can do on a computer. Which one is right for you we hope we can help you make that decision. The first and most important thing we feel a parent or guardian must do is communicate with your child. There are ways around every parental control but if you are involved with your child then you may see the warnings or sense the danger before something bad may happen.

***Only allow internet access on a computer that is visible to you. Do not let kids have unmonitored access to the internet in there rooms that's like inviting child molesters over for sleep overs.***

If you haven't reviewed our article Tips for Responsible Internet Usage under our Basics section please do so there are some very simple and practical tips that everyone can use.

Internet filtering programs are what most people usually think of when you talk about parental controls for computers. There are some great programs out there and we have included a list of those under the Software Based Parental Controls section.

The software that's available for computers to filter, block, monitor, and limit access per time restrictions is enormous. The software option is great if you have one PC in the house directly connected to the internet, but if you have wireless router and multiple computers as well as devices like the WII, PSP, and Nintendo DS (see the article other internet ready devices) then you may want to look at the Hardware Based Parental Controls section.

There are times when both strategies are necessary though. If you have kids of different ages with their own computers then you may want to employ different strategies for the different children. Some software programs allow you to set different levels of filtering depending on the age and trust level of the child. Each child would have their own login and can do different things on the computer. You may have laptops with wireless access and need a wireless router thus opening up the internet to other devices that are internet ready (read section on securing your wireless network) We have two sections for you to check out. The Software Based Parental Controls page will help you learn more about some of the programs that are available, and if you are interested in protecting a whole house hold of computers the check out the Hardware Based Parental Controls.

 Spector Pro
You tell Spector Pro which words and phrases to watch out for - for example, "sex," “drugs,” “guns,” "phone number," "where do you live," "are your parents home," "I hate my boss" - whatever YOU decide to include. You also tell Spector Pro where to send the INSTANT ALERTS (you specify your email address at the office or on your cell phone).

Then, when the person using the computer TYPES in one of these words or phrases, or when they are chatting and one of these words comes up, or when they are sending or receiving an email with one of these words or phrases, Spector Pro responds IMMEDIATELY and sends you an email letting you know exactly what is happening so you can take action.

Hardware based Parental Controls:

There are two types of Hardware based Parental Control devices. A Router and a Proxy Server. Both of these generally go between your broadband connection and your network. They in essence capture all the traffic coming into and out of your home and filter or block that traffic depending on how they are setup.

The Router with parental controls:

A Router with parental controls built in has some type of software either running on it or it directs all of the traffic in and out through an external Proxy server that is hosted by the  hardware vendor on their network. This is all seamless and you won't even know its happening.  It does the same thing that a piece of filtering software running on your PC will do but it does it for all the connected devices in your home. This is nice in that it relieves you from having to install and update each computer in your house and if a computer gets messed up and needs to be reloaded you don't have to worry about reloading your software. Most of the Routers up to this point that had parental controls built in required you to pay some monthly fee for filtering capability.

PIA offers a router that is pre-configured with OpenDNS  a free online filtering service. Please click here to learn more about the PIA Router or Click here to learn more about OpenDNS.

These routers also have the ability to limit the time the internet can be accessed but it affects every computer in your household not just the kids computer.

The second hardware option is a Proxy Server that resides in your home. This is a lot more complicated but not impossible to do. The Proxy server is a computer loaded with special software that has 2 network cards inside for intercepting all the internet traffic coming and going through your internet connection. The special software can range vastly depending on what you want it to do.

IP-COP  is a proxy server software that contains DansGuardian, when this software is loaded it will take over an entire computer to be the proxy server as long as it has 2 network cards. You can use an old computer that's sitting in a closet somewhere and install a second network card and then load IP-COP. There are several other similar programs out there but they all require a dedicated PC except Untangle. Untangle can be loaded just like IP-COP but there is also a version that will run on your Windows based computer and act as a proxy server for your home network. Untangle has lots of ways to protect and monitor your network and if your brave enough to try its free. These proxy servers can be configured with user based policies, meaning you can customize the filtering for the user. If mom or dad logs in to the comuter no filtering can be the setting and if Jr. logs in the maximum can be the setting.

There are also many commercialy available proxy servers out there if you have the money.
