This section will educate you on the growing market of internet ready devices popping up such as Gaming Consoles (XBOX, Playstation, Nintendo, Etc..)  MP3 Players (Ipod, Zune), and more.

*Read our Wireless router section to find out how to block these devices from gaining WI-FI internet access, this would not apply to cell phones that get online through the cell phone network.

Game Consoles that are internet ready:

  • Microsoft Xbox and Xbox 360 (has wired network but not wireless out of the box) 
  • Sony PS3 (wirless built in)
  • Nintendo Wii (wireless built in)
  • Sony PSP (wireless built in)
  • Nintendo DS (wireless built in) 
  • Sony PS2 (no out of the box internet must be added)

even getting online or if you want
to limit or control there access

Cell Phones:

Most new cell phones have the ability to access the internet through the cell network or WI-FI. The internet data package is usually separate but you need to check with your cell company.

Click on the provider to read about their parental controls.

  • AT&T
  • Verizon
  • Sprint
  • T-Mobile
  • Alltel (not really parental controls)
  • Cricket (they did not seem to have parental controls available)
  • Virgin Mobile
  • Qwest
  • U.S. Cellular
The actual cell phone manufacturer may also have parental controls available for their phone.

MP3 Players:

  • Apple Ipod 
  • Microsoft ZUNE
  • Creative ZEN
  • Sandisk Sansa Connect
  • And a new MP3 coming out every other day.

DVR Devices:

Though this may be new technology there will be an explosion of providers offering you media on demand services that use the internet to stream content directly to you rather than you changing the channel and waiting for something to come on.
